Janet Hutchinson

Based: Hastings

Janet Hutchinson makes ceramic tiles and hand-painted silk artworks.

In 1975 she graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and then moved to the US Virgin Islands where she began to paint on silk.

She developed a business selling hand painted silk clothing and sarongs there for many years and eventually started to make larger fabric pieces for the wall.

Her work was sold in galleries and boutiques on many Caribbean Islands as well as in the US. Janet exhibited her work in West Virginia also, and was commissioned to paint a large public mural there in 1996.

Seven years ago Janet came to NZ with her Kiwi partner and they started the major task of translating her silk paintings to ceramic tiles by means of dye sublimation.

Janet’s work is lively and full of bright colours and iconic New Zealand motifs and scenes. In their small format they bring a jolt of warmth and colour to the home, and because of this they have been very popular with locals and overseas visitors.
