Jeff Thompson

Born: Auckland 1957

Based: Helensville

Jeff Thomson works predominantly with corrugated iron, exploring its intrinsic qualities in ways that continue to challenge how we see this common and stubborn material.

Jeff completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam in 1981. In 1995 he was awarded the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship at the University of Otago, and in 2000 he was the Tylee Cottage Artist in Residence at Whanganui’s Sarjeant Gallery.

Jeff has exhibited throughout New Zealand and Australia for over 20 years, and between 1999 and 2003 he exhibited regularly in Germany. In 2002 he had a public gallery touring exhibition which travelled to several German cities, finishing in Berlin. It was Berlin where he also had a public sculpture installed in 2004, a gift from the people of New Zealand to the people of Berlin.

Recently Jeff completed the new Public toilets in Helensville, the twenty-fifth outdoor public artwork he has made during his career.
