Born: Hamilton, 1979
Based: Napier Mike Crawford is a cast glass artist. He grew up in Whangarei, moving to Auckland to complete a Bachelor of Design (Sculpture) and in 2008 relocated to Hawke’s Bay.
Mike began working with cast glass in 2002, taking a position as a technician to renowned glass artist Ann Robinson. Interested in how cast glass can be used to express sculptural ideas, Mike has developed a body of work focused on his own Maori/European ancestry, often exploring historical objects and aspects of decorative art traditions.
Mike has work in the permanent collection of the Dowse and in private collections around New Zealand, Australia and North America. In 2010 one of Mike’s ‘Moa bowls’ was included in the prestigious applied arts and design exhibition Talente, held annually in Munich, Germany.
