Perry Davies

Born: Takapuna, 1944

Based: Ongaonga, Central Hawke's Bay

Perry has been making and exhibiting work since 1981. He started out printmaking, which he also taught at the ASA School of Art on their Degree Programme.

In 1986 he won the Bank of New Zealand National Print Award. The 1990's saw him demonstrating his wood-skills, with quirky sculptures and one-off furniture pieces, which were exhibited widely and are held in collections both here and overseas.

A shift to Hawke's Bay in 2004 to develop an old store into a home, studio and workshop has seen further development of his furniture. Here, his work is influenced by the rural landscape, and the availability of 'found' timber stirs his interest in a rural architectural vernacular, which he seeks to emulate in his hedgerow benches and singular birdhouses.
